city of Poland, the capital of the circle of that name. It is situated between the branches of the river Prosna, in a marshy situation. It contains ten churches, one of which, formerly the Jesuits', is now used by Lutherans. There is a college for military students, in an university which belonged to the Jesuits. It contains 7310 inhabitants, of whom 1800 are Jews. There are manufactories of cloth, hats, and linen goods, and a large annual fair. Long. 18. 55. E. Lat. 51. 51. N.
