town of the county of Warwick, in the hundred of Knightlow, 100 miles from London. It is celebrated as the residence of the Earl of Leicester, the favourite of Elizabeth, and for the entertainments given in the castle, the ruins of which attest their former splendour. There is a market which is held on Wednesday. The inhabitants amounted in 1801 to 1968, in 1811 to 2279, in 1821 to 2577, and in 1831 to 3097.
