a city of the duchy of Brunswick, in Germany, the capital of a circle of the same name. It is on the river Lutter, is walled, and contains a palace of the prince, two churches, in one of which the minster is an ancient monument to the memory of the Emperor Lothario the Second and his empress. It contains 338 houses, and 2850 inhabitants, who carry on several extensive distilleries, and make linen and other cloths.
