an arrondissement of France, in the department of the Northern Coasts, extending over 403 square miles, and containing a population of 90,500 persons. It is divided into seven cantons and fifty-nine communes. The capital is a city of the same name, situated on the river Guer, about two miles from the sea, and contains 3200 inhabitants. In the neighbourhood are some mines, which yield some iron and a little silver.
