Terra Lemnia, a medicinal, astrin- gent sort of earth, of a fatty consistence and reddish colour. It derives its name from the island of Lemnes, whence it is chiefly brought. Many form it into round cakes, and impress a seal upon it; and hence it is also called terra sigillata.
**LEMNUS, Levinus**, a famous physician, born in Zealand in 1505. He practised physic with much applause; and, having taken holy orders, became canon of Ziric Zee, where he died in 1560. He left several works, the principal of which is entitled *De occultis Natura Miraculis*.
