a large island in the Adriatic Sea, being a part of the Austrian province of Dalmatia. It extends over 396 square miles, and contains one city, three market-towns, and thirty villages, with 8819 inhabitants. Although the surface is both woody and mountainous, it has some beautiful and productive valleys, yielding in abundance wine, olives, figs, and almonds, and an adequate supply of corn. Much of the wine is exported. The Sardinia fishery is a profitable branch of industry. The capital is a town of the same name, containing a castle, a cathedral, and 1237 inhabitants.
