city of the province of Osnaburg, in the kingdom of Hanover, the capital of a bailiwick of the same name. It is situated on the river Ems, which is only navigable thereto for a few months in the year. It is surrounded with ditches, contains a Catholic, a Reformed, and a Lutheran church, 380 houses, and 1930 inhabitants. There is a seminary, sometimes called a university, with five professors.
