a town of Ireland, in the county of Antrim, situated on the western bank of the river Lagan, about seven miles south-south-west of Belfast. It is a large and busy town, being the second in commercial importance in the county. The manufacture of linen, muslin, and cambric, is carried on to a considerable extent. The principal public buildings are, a fine church, a market-house, an infirmary, a catholic chapel, and several dissenting places of worship. It was destroyed by fire in 1707, and rebuilt in its present form. It returns a member to parliament. It contains a population of 6201.
