a market-town of North Wales, in the county of Montgomery and hundred of its own name, 190 miles from London. It is pleasantly situated on the right bank of the Severn. Phlinlimmon, the highest mountain in Wales, is distant from it about seven miles. It joins with Welch-Pool, Machynlleth, Llanvilling, and Newton, in electing one member to the House of Commons. The population amounted in 1801 to 2282, in 1811 to 2386, in 1821 to 3145, and in 1831 to 4189.
