a market-town of the county of Kent, in the hundred of Langport and lathe of Shepway, seventy-three miles from London. It is in a low situation, on Romney Marsh; and is a member of the Cinque Ports, near the sea. It has a small market, which is held on Thursday. The population amounted in 1801 to 1363, in 1811 to 1504, in 1821 to 1437, and in 1831 to 1357.
