MADEN

Volume 13 · 58 words · 1842 Edition

a town of Armenia, on the Tigris, so named Madghery from the copper and iron mines in its vicinity. Its situation is very striking and singular, being surrounded on all sides by bleak and barren mountains of great elevation, and overlooking a prodigious chasm, through which the Tigris forces a passage. It is sixty miles north of Diarbekir.
