used in coining, are pieces of steel in the form of dies, on which are engraven the several figures, arms, characters, and legends, wherewith the species are to be stamped. The engraving is performed with several punchons, which, being formed in relievo, or prominent, when struck on the metal, make an indented impression, which the French call en creux.
