in Natural History, the name of an earth famous in the earliest ages of painting, being the only white the great painters of antiquity used; and, according to Pliny's account, one of the three colours with which alone they performed all their works. From the description given of this earth it seems to have been aluminous, tolerably pure, and in a state of minute division.
