a town of the county of Wilts, in the hundred of the same name, ninety-nine miles from London, and situated on one of the great roads to Bath. It is a well built town, chiefly inhabited by persons employed in making fine cloths and cassimores. It has a cattle market, which is held on alternate Thursdays, but none for provisions is regularly held. The inhabitants were in 1801, 4030; in 1811, 4110; in 1821, 4765; and in 1831, 4722.
