It is situated on a branch of the river Ouse, which is navigable for barges up to it, and is a source of its trade. There is a well-supplied market, which is held on Friday. The population amounted in 1801 to 2283, in 1811 to 2493, in 1821 to 2974, and in 1831 to 3267.
