an arrondissement of the department of the Meuse, in France, extending over 522 square miles. It is divided into six cantons, and these again into 132 communes, containing 60,000 inhabitants. The capital is a city of the same name, situated on the river Ebiers. It is strongly fortified, and defended by a citadel in the upper town, built on a rocky eminence.
