a town of the county of Devon, in the hundred of Teignbridge, 184 miles from London. It stands in a picturesque situation at the foot of Dartmoor Hills. It is an ancient corporate town, and has a market on Saturday, with some natural curiosities worthy of observation, especially by the geologist. The population amounted in 1801 to 1768, in 1811 to 1653, in 1821 to 1932, and in 1831 to 1864.
