arrondissement of the department of Cantal, in France, 343 square miles in extent. It is divided into three cantons, and subdivided into thirty-one communes, containing 34,250 inhabitants. The capital, a city of the same name, stands at the foot of the mountain Cantal, on the river Alagnon. It contains 530 houses, and 2640 inhabitants, who are chiefly employed as copper-smiths, but also make some thread lace.
