a city of the kingdom of Naples, in the province of Terra di Lavoro. It is the site of an ancient Roman city, buried under the effects of an eruption of Mount Vesuvius, and is altogether a gloomy place, with a cathedral and thirteen other churches, containing 8950 inhabitants.
