a town of Asiatic Russia, in the government of Tomsk, situated at the junction of the river Om with the Irtysh. It is intended as a barrier against the incursions of the Kirghises. It is an agreeable town, and the general's house, the church, and the military school, are handsome edifices. It has always a garrison, and the inhabitants amount to 800. It is deficient in a supply of wood, which the coldness of the climate renders almost a necessary of life. The original fort was built in 1716, but was transferred to its present site in 1766.
