a fortress of the south of India, in the province of Mysore. It was occupied by the Mahrattas in the year 1688, but was taken from them by the nabob of Cuddapah, and retaken by the Mahrattas. In 1761 it was besieged and taken by Hyder Ali; and seven years afterwards it was taken by the British, but recovered by Hyder in 1773. It fell under the power of the British in 1779, and was made over to the new rajah of Mysore along with the province. It is fifteen miles north-east of Bangalore.
