a township of the parish of Wigan, in the hundred of West Derby, in the county of Lancaster, 198 miles from London. It has no market, and is chiefly inhabited by manufacturers. The population amounted in 1801 to 2309, in 1811 to 2934, in 1821 to 3679, and in 1831 to 4277.
