PENNYWEIGHT

Volume 17 · 59 words · 1842 Edition

Troy weight, containing twenty-four grains, each grain weighing a grain of wheat, gathered out of the middle of the ear, and well dried. The name took its rise from the circumstance that this was anciently the weight of one of our silver pennies.

Penorcon, an old musical instrument of the guitar kind, with nine strings and a broad finger-board.
