a city of Spain, in the province of Estremadura, the capital of a partido of the same name, which comprises two fruitful districts on the two sides of the river Vera. It is situated on the river Xerte, between two hills, and has been fortified, but its defences have been neglected. It has seven gates protected by towers, twenty-two streets and squares, seven churches, as many monasteries, five hospitals, two colleges, 950 houses, and 5200 inhabitants, who are occupied in tanning leather, and in making hats and pottery ware. The district around produces much honey and bees' wax, which adds to its trade. The city is supplied with water by means of a fine aqueduct of eighty arches.
