PLUTUS

Volume 18 · 68 words · 1842 Edition

in Pagan worship, the god of riches, is frequently confounded with Pluto. He was represented as appearing lame when he approached, but provided with wings at his departure, to show the difficulty of amassing wealth and the uncertainty of its enjoyment. He was also represented blind, to show that he often bestowed his favours on the most unworthy, and left in necessity those who had the greatest merit.
