It is situated on a tongue of land running into the sea, and forming a small bay. PORTO-NOVO, a sea-port town of the south of India, in the Carnatic. It is esteemed the safest port on the Coromandel coast. The ground is good, and vessels may anchor in six fathoms water. In August 1781, the British gained a victory here over Hyder Aly. Long. 79° 52' E. Lat. 11° 30' N.
