a township of the hundred of Salford, in the county of Lancaster, 184 miles from London, and four from Manchester. It is inhabited chiefly by cotton manufacturers. The population amounted in 1801 to 1811; in 1811 to 2175; in 1821 to 2724; and in 1831 to 2941.
