a town of the county of Hertford, in the hundred of Cashio; twenty-six miles from London, and on the great northern road. It consists of a single street, about a mile in length. The population amounted in 1801 to 1153, in 1811 to 1333, in 1821 to 1784, and in 1831 to 2047.
