or Nitre (nitrate of potash), a compound of nitric acid and potash. It is generally obtained in the form of six-sided prismatic crystals, terminated by six-sided pyramids, joined by their bases. Its specific gravity is 1.483. See Chemistry.

It is used in the various arts, and is the principal ingredient in the manufacture of gunpowder. See Gunpowder.
