It is the residence of the apostolic vicar of the Roman Catholic Christians, who superintends sixty-four churches. There are besides forty-five governed by the archbishop of Cranganore, and also the large diocese under the bishop of Cochin and Quilon, whose churches extend to Cape Comorin.
