a market-town of the county of Somerset, in the hundred of Brent and Wrington, 125 miles from London. It is chiefly noted as the birth-place of that great philosopher John Locke. It has a small market on Tuesday. The population amounted in 1821 to 1349, and in 1831 to 1540.
