ABANTES

Volume 2 · 66 words · 1860 Edition

a people of ancient Greece who came originally from Thrace, and settled in Phocis, where they built a town which they called Aba, after the name of Abas their leader. If we may credit some ancient authors, the Abantes afterwards migrated to the island of Euboea; according to other authorities the Abantes of Euboea came from Athens. The national character of the Abantes was very warlike.
