ABATEMENT

in Heraldry, an accidental figure supposed to have been added to coats of arms, in order to denote some dishonourable demeanour or stain, whereby the dignity of coat armour was rendered of less esteem.

Rebate, or Rebatement, in Commerce, is a discount for ready money; and it also means a deduction sometimes made at the custom-house from the fixed duties on certain kinds of goods, on account of damage or loss sustained in warehouses. The rate of such deduction is regulated by Act 3 and 4 Will. IV. c. 52.
