a parish and large village of South Wales, in the county of Glamorgan. The village is situated in a beautiful valley, watered by the river Cynon, an affluent of the Taf, about 4½ miles south-west of Merthyr-Tydfil. In 1831, the population was only 3961; but, owing to the rapid and enormous extension of the iron-trade, the number has increased more than threefold, mostly employed in the manufacture of iron, and the raising of coal.
