Volume 2 · 58 words · 1860 Edition

a town of France, in the department of Gard, 20 miles south-west of Nîmes. It was once a seaport town, and here St Louis embarked on his two expeditions to Africa; but it is now four miles distant from the coast, being connected with it by the Roubine canal. The surrounding marshes render it very unhealthy. Pop. 3365.
