a fortress on the south-west frontier of Russian Georgia, formerly the capital of a Turkish paschalik. Lat. 41° 35' N. Long. 42° 45' E. The adjoining town is supposed to have a population of 15,000. The neighbourhood produces silk, honey, and wax, with excellent raisins, peaches, apricots, figs, and other fruits.
