from the French allumer, to lighten, an old term for one who coloured or painted upon paper or parchment; because he gave light and ornament by his colours to the letters or other figures. Such ornaments are styled illuminations. The term is used in statute I Richard III. cap. 9; and is still traceable in the word limner.
