a town of Holland, in the province of Utrecht, 12 miles E.N.E. of the city of that name, and situated on the river Eem, which here is navigable. In 1850 it contained 12,360 inhabitants. The chief buildings are the town-house, and the great church dedicated to St George. It has a court of primary jurisdiction, a college, and an industrial school. Woollen, cotton, silk, glass, and tobacco, are manufactured here; and the transit trade is very considerable.
