Bartolomeo, a celebrated Florentine architect and sculptor, of the time of Michael Angelo, who was much employed both at home and in Rome. The beautiful and stable bridge over the Arno, *Ponte della Trinita*, is one of his celebrated works. The three arches are elliptic, very light, and elegant, yet have resisted the utmost fury of the river which has swept away several other bridges at different times. He was born in 1511, and died in 1592, at the age of 81. His wife, daughter of Giov. Antonio Balifieri, an elegant and accomplished woman, published a volume of poems that are highly esteemed in Italy.
