a city of South America, in the republic of Venezuela. Lat. 8° 8' 10" N. Long. 63° 55' 20" W. It stands on the south bank of the Orinoco, about 240 miles from its mouth. It is favourably situated for commerce, being in a very fertile district, and the river is navigable for vessels of 300 tons up to the town. In the year 1841-2, 419 vessels entered and left its port, of the aggregate burthen of 29,863 tons. The value of its imports for that year is said to have been Ls.63,353; of its exports Ls.115,851. It has a large city hall, an hospital, and a college, and is defended by a fort on the opposite side of the river. Pop. in 1846, 10,000.
