Volume 3 · 92 words · 1860 Edition

a town of France, in the department of Ardèche, situated at the confluence of the rivers Cance and Deaune, 37 miles south of Lyons. It is a very prosperous manufacturing town, irregularly built, and presents little worthy of notice, except an obelisk in honour of the celebrated Montgolfier (who was a native of this place), and a suspension bridge in its vicinity, the first constructed in France. The principal manufacture is that of paper, long reckoned the best in France. It has also manufactures of gloves, cotton, woollen, and silk. Pop. 9893.
