This was divided into two dialects—the western and the eastern; the former is the Syriac, and the latter is the Chaldaic or Babylonian. Both, though nearly dead tongues, are yet used by some tribes about the ancient Aram, and in the hills near Mosul; and it was the most common dialect of the Jews after the Babylonian captivity till their dispersion by the Romans.
