a seaport town of Ireland, county of Down, six miles south-east of Downpatrick, was formerly a place of considerable importance. Population in 1851, 974, chiefly engaged in the fisheries. It is much frequented by visitors during the bathing season. Vessels of 500 tons may enter the outer harbour at all tides, and its inner cove admits vessels of 100 tons. There is a lighthouse at the extremity of the pier in Lat. 54° 15' N., Long. 5° 36' W.
