a seaport town of European Russia, capital of the Island of Oesel in the Baltic, at the mouth of the Gulf of Riga. It is situated on the south side of the island, in Lat. 58. 15. N. Long. 22. 18. E. Pop. 1600. From the shallowness of its harbour, vessels are obliged to anchor in the roads, about five miles west of the town.
