a small decayed town of France, department of Seine Inferieure, on a navigable river of the same name, 3 miles south-east of Dieppe. It was once a very considerable place, and its castle, now in ruins, was an important stronghold in the middle ages. In the vicinity of this town Henri IV., with about 6000 or 7000 men, gained a victory over the army of the league, consisting of 30,000, commanded by the Duke of Mayenne, on the 21st Sept. 1589. The victory was severely contested, and Henri had encountered many personal dangers, when the arrival of the Count of Clastillon at the head of 500 arquebusiers decided the fate of the day.
