ARTEMIS

Volume 3 · 60 words · 1860 Edition

one of the chief divinities of Olympus, and worshipped under several forms in different parts of Greece and Asia Minor. The Ephesian Artemis was totally distinct from the Grecian goddess, and is supposed to have been originally an Asiatic divinity, the personification of the fructifying and all-nourishing powers of nature. The Romans identified Diana with the Greek Artemis. See DIANA.
