a Roman consul and orator, who distinguished himself under Augustus by his exploits and literary works. He is frequently mentioned with praise by Horace and Virgil, and is said to have collected the first library at Rome. He died at Frascati, at eighty years of age, A.D. 4. None of his works are extant.
