a market-town of Warwickshire, hundred of Hemlingford, 23 miles N. of Warwick. It consists chiefly of one street, is well paved and lighted with gas; and its sanitary condition has lately been much improved by sewers, &c. It has a market-house; a parochial chapel, once part of a convent; a Roman Catholic chapel; Independent and Methodist meeting-houses; a free grammar-school; a free school for boys, and another for girls; an infant school; a literary institution; subscription library; savings bank; and a dispensary. The staple manufacture is that of hats. The Coventry canal, which passes close by the town, adds considerably to its trading facilities. Pop. in 1851, 3819.
