Augusta, capital of the county of Kennebec, in the state of Maine, N. America, is situated on both sides of the river Kennebec, 43 miles from the ocean. The river is here crossed by a fine bridge, 520 feet in length; and the town is well laid out, containing a handsome state-house of white granite, an arsenal, lunatic asylum, &c. Population (1850) 8231.
