formerly Albemarle, from the Latin Alba Marlia, a town of France, capital of a canton in the department of Seine Inferieure, on the banks of the Bresle, 35 miles N.E. of Rouen. Pop. 2000. The French dukedom of Aumale, originally a county, has belonged since 1675 to princes of the blood. In the English peerage the earldom of Albemarle is at present in the family of Keppel.
